I stumbled upon the trailer for Peter Weir’s (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, The Truman Show, Dead Poets Society) new epic escape/adventure film by accident, but after watching the preview, looking at the cast list and reading about the story, it is definitely on my must-see list for 2011 (it opens in limited release, probably holding out hope for Oscar season, on December 29, 2010, and wide release on January 21, 2011).
The Way Back stars Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe), Colin Farrell (Crazy Heart), Ed Harris (Appaloosa), Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones) and Mark Strong (Robin Hood). The story is based on a memoir written by Slawomir Rawicz, a Polish soldier who claimed to have been imprisoned and escaped, with six compatriots, from a Siberian gulag in 1941. He claimed that he and his companions trekked across the Gobi Desert, Tibet and the Himalayas, finally making it to British-occupied India in 1942. There have been many questions about the authenticity and legitimacy of Rawicz’s story, but the book, written by Ronald Downing, is immensely popular and has sold half a million copies worldwide.
Check out the trailer after the jump and let me know if I’m smoking crack on thinking this movie looks fantastic.

Peter Weir is a solid, solid director, Carrey’s annoyance in the Truman show notwithstanding. His helming of Master and Commander yielded a deep, rich and thrilling film that was totally underrated, seen by no one and yet deserves high fives all around.
Can’t wait for The Way Back.
I am really looking forward to this– I love Ed Harris and the filming looks gorgeous!
I would like to say one thing about Ed Harris: His voice is AWESOME. He is making Call of Duty, along with Sam Worthington and Ice Cube (never thought I’d say that), a real pleasure to play.
