Trailer Tuesday: How to Train Your Dragon

how-to-train-your-dragonDan will have a review of Disney’s A Christmas Carol later this week, so I don’t want to spoil his thoughts or give any details away, but I will say this: Despite all it’s lavishness, it’s missing one key element – heart. In fact, to better illustrate and to introduce my pick for Trailer Tuesday, I will say DreamWorks Animation’s forthcoming How to Train Your Dragon has more heart in two and half minutes than Robert Zemeckis’ A Christmas Carol did in 96.

How to Train Your Dragon, not to be confused with a porn movie of the same name (I kid!), is directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, the duo behind 2002’s Lilo & Stitch. It also features the voice talent of Jay Baruchel (Knocked Up), Gerard Butler (Law Abiding Citizen), America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Jonah Hill (Funny People), Kristen Wiig (Whip It) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Role Models). The movie hits theaters on March 26, 2010.

With the exception of Gerard “Don’t Call Me Matthew McConaughey” Butler, the voice talent, especially with Baruchel as one of, if not the, main players, is modest and reserved and I like that. When mega-stars lend their voices to animation the product usually sucks. I realize that’s not always true, but most of the time it is.

And let me toss out another nugget of truth – Pixar, despite all their greatness, really shouldn’t feel too comfortable wearing the crown, because with gems like Kung-Fu Panda and Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs, other studios are starting to understand the animation game better than before and should give them a better fight financially and critically.

Check out the trailer below and let me know your thoughts. I say super duper, what say ye?

  • Dude..im all worked up n stoked to see christmas carol!
You killin me smalls! Even if Carrey is the lead vocal..

Whats the issue, do their eyes still look dead like in Beowulf?

  • Dead face galore. They can nail everything else- but they can’t inject life. Andy’s pretty indifferent, but I’m a fan of the story and thought a little more highly of it. I can see where he’s coming from, but… well, review tomorrow.

  • I didn’t hate it, I just thought it was average. Jim Carrey is pretty good in the movie. And I think the animation looks pretty stellar, definitely better than Beowulf, but it just is lacking in that bright, happy holiday spirit I’ve come to expect from such a release.
