Zero Dark Thirty, in a word, looks awesome. The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow’s last movie, was, in my opinion, a perfect film. This follow-up, a slice of cinematic heaven detailing the decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind 9/11, is assuredly as good, if not better. I’m saying that right now, having only seen the trailer. I trust Bigelow like I trust Christopher Nolan. Like I trust Pixar. Like I don’t trust George Lucas. This movie is going …

I think the title said it all. This looks creepy. Maybe it’s because the little creatures look like messed up bats or maybe because they speak freaking I have no idea except for the fact that this, sir, is scary crap. I mean if you watch this and say it is not scary you have issues my friend. Don’t be Afraid of the Dark is about a girl named Sally who goes to live with her dad, Alex, and his girlfriend, Kim. …
If an independent movie plays in an independent cinema and no one goes to see it, did it really exist? On last Friday’s KVNU Movie Show, we were asked why a community like Logan, Utah couldn’t have a successful independent cinema. Moving away from Logan, the heart of the question was really: “Why don’t mass audiences support independent film”? I gave some quick answer about how it’s marketing and awareness and word of mouth and when independent films have almost …
I’ve been in a bad mood for the last few days, so I thought I’d follow my Best of the Decade article from earlier this week with a look back at 2009’s worst films. Then I realized that admist all my 2010 celebrations, I’d neglected to list the best of 2009 as well. I’m sure, like everything in the world of film, these are debatable. One person’s nightmare is another’s wet dream, so while I wanted to commit hara-kiri during …
The American Film Institute has rolled out its AFI Awards, an annual top ten list of the year’s best films. AFI’s 2009 list includes Coraline, The Hangover, The Hurt Locker, The Messenger, Precious, A Serious Man, A Single Man, Sugar, Up and Up in The Air. I can agree with all of those, however I haven’t seen The Messenger, A Single Man, Sugar or Up in The Air. I was hoping to see the latter, but apparently in the world …
The Hurt Locker, arguably the best film of the year, comes to the Logan Art Cinema this Friday. This is a must-see movie and I’d bet the response and traffic will be so large the head honchos at the Westates move The Hurt Locker to Movies 5 or University Stadium 6. The Logan Art Cinema is located at 785 North Main, directly west from Smith’s Marketplace. Showtime is 7:00 PM and 9:30 PM. I highly encourage you to catch this …
Seems like I’ve been pimping Kathryn Bigelow’s universally praised The Hurt Locker since time began. Way back in May I listed it as one of the summer’s Must Sees. Unfortunately, it’s been tough to catch a screening as it’s been rolling around in a very limited LA/New York release. Three cheers for small miracles as The Hurt Locker opens a little wider this weekend and has Salt Lake City listed as one of the fortunate cities it’s shacking up with. …
The headline about sums it up. I’m turning into a shill. One of my most anticipated summer films is The Hurt Locker. Between my pimping on KVNU and here at AATM, I’m sold on the idea that while The Hurt Locker is a summer film flying under the radar, it shouldn’t be. The new poster features an image taken wholesale from an “Oh, ****” action beat in the film, but it’s the screaming quotes along the top that should have …
