Howard Stern Ridicules Gabourey Sidibe’s Weight

There is no mistaking the obvious – Gabourey Sidibe is extremely overweight. Pundits everywhere can argue reasons for her to lose weight, the least of which being her looks, but at the end of the day Miss Sidibe is a human being and deserves to be treated with respect. Her weight should not determine her value as a person. Who knows what Hollywood has in store for the talented actress. It’s more than evident she is smart, classy and confident.

Mariah Carey is Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs

Listen, I think Mariah Carey did a wonderful job in Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. As a mustachioed social worker who doesn’t believe in make-up or showering, it was convincing and nothing short of strong. It reminded me of Cameron Diaz in Being John Malkovich and Charlize Theron in Monster. And frankly, if it wasn’t for Mo’Nique and Paula Patton’s performances, she might be getting a bit more award consideration in the supporting actress column. But, BUT,

American Film Institue Names Best of 2009

The American Film Institute has rolled out its AFI Awards, an annual top ten list of the year’s best films. AFI’s 2009 list includes Coraline, The Hangover, The Hurt Locker, The Messenger, Precious, A Serious Man, A Single Man, Sugar, Up and Up in The Air. I can agree with all of those, however I haven’t seen The Messenger, A Single Man, Sugar or Up in The Air. I was hoping to see the latter, but apparently in the world

Movie Review: Precious (A)

Precious is an exercise in endurance. It’s a film intent to look you in the face with no intention of sparing any modicum of pain, hurt and unbearably selfish horror. Even the title itself is a tragic blow– a name with inherent meaning that’s been melted under the acidic wash of fate to become a mockery. And yet, it’s also a reminder of individually infinite value. So Precious goes: an experience almost wholly unpleasant but one where, by the end,

In-Depth Look at Precious Director Daniels

Back on October 13th, I introduced AATM.com readers to a trailer for the film festival darling, Precious. And when I say darling, I don’t mean light and fluffy, like last year’s Slumdog Millionaire. Precious is a gritty look at life in the slums via an overweight, abused, pregnant (for the second time) teenager. It’s bleak, harsh and unrelenting and rightly so. Topics raised in this movie aren’t specific to color, sex or gender. And the movie and performances from Mariah

Trailer Tuesday: Precious

One of my favorite films of all time is Monster’s Ball. It’s full of bleak, despairing truth, as well as hope and life. It’s heartbreaking and heartwarming all at once. It’s no surprise to me that Precious, a film about an illiterate, obese teenager living in Harlem in the late  1980s, is directed by Lee Daniels, as he was one of the producers of Monster’s Ball. In fact, the novelist behind Precious (the novel is actually called Push), a woman
