My first NBA basketball game was in April of 1986 at the old Salt Palace where the Utah Jazz played until the Delta Center opened in 1991. I tell you this so you know I witnessed in person the greatness and mystique of one Eric “Sleepy” Floyd, back when NBA nicknames were solid gold. Why was he called Sleepy? When he was in fourth grade someone yelled “Get that kid out of the game; he looks like he’s sleeping!” And the rest is history. Sleepy and the rest of the Golden State Warriors broke my heart when they beat the Utah Jazz during the first round of the 1987 NBA Playoffs. The Jazz had home court advantage and had gone up 2-0 in the best of five series. Game two ended in a brouhaha after Karl Malone decided to fire the ball at Greg Ballard.
What does this have to do with the new movie FREAKY TALES that premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival? Sleepy Floyd, of course, who is played by TOP GUN: MAVERICK actor Jay Ellis. The movie also stars Pedro Pascal (THE LAST OF US) and Ben Mendelsohn (ROGUE ONE) and is due to hit cinemas on April 4, 2025. I’m not sure I even have the words to describe the plot of this movie, so make sure to watch the trailer for yourself. This looks absolutely wild and hopefully will be a fun flick. What do you think? Yay or nay?
