It’s Official, Avatar Now the Box Office Shiz Niz

James Cameron must have a direct line to God or something, because the naysayers (including me) guffawed at the ballooned budget of 1997’s Titanic and predicted it would bomb at the box office. Instead, as we all know, Titanic became the worldwide and domestic box office champ, a record that’s held until today when, ironically, another big budget Cameron epic booted the iceberg-doomed ocean liner from number one to number two. And yes, I will admit, back on December 17,

Titans… Will… Clash… One Week Later

Damn this 3D frenzy. Dammitall! Warner Brothers recently held a screening to test how the 2D filmed Clash of the Titans would play with a trendy new 3D upgrade. Apparently, the test worked like peanut butter and ladies. Warner has just announced they’ll release the rockin’ monster-heavy Grecian revival in both old-school/nerdy 2D and new-school/the hotness 3D. Thanks for ruining everything, Avatar! So depending on which side of the 3D camp you’re living on, there’s good and bad news. First,

Avatar Set to Sink Titanic’s Longstanding Box Office Reign

So three weeks ago on the KVNU Movie Show I stupidly claimed Avatar would be hard pressed to beat Titanic’s longstanding box office record of $600,788,188 and wouldn’t even come close to the iceberg-doomed ship’s grip on the all-time worldwide box office of $1,842,879,955. Sure it was making some noise in December, but recent box office trends suggested it would drop by 50% or more in consecutive release weeks. I was confident in my opinion. Color me corrected. As, Tyler

‘Avatar’ to Andy: Suck it!

Andy, three weeks ago: “Avatar has no chance of upending Titanic.” Andy, two weeks ago: “It’s very unlikely that Avatar will replace Titanic as the top grossing movie of all time.” Andy, one week ago: “Avatar could beat Titanic.” Andy, today: “Pwned.” The socialist Canadian Broadcasting Company reports: James Cameron’s 3-D blockbuster Avatar has toppled one of the many records set by his earlier epic, Titanic. Kapuskasing, Ont.-born Cameron’s science fiction extravaganza spent a sixth consecutive week atop box offices

Tron Time is Sexy Time

I’m a sucker for visual/art/production design. Which explains why Andy’s correctly dubbed me a Bluray whore and why on Tuesday Pandorum (review here) made off with $20 of my hard-earned stripping dollars, why I periodically revisit the vile Alien: Resurrection and why The Spirit is shaming Spider-Man 3 and Starship Troopers on my Bluray shelf. It’s also why, whether Tron Legacy will be good or bad, I get all slobbery when I think forward (way, way off in the distance

(500) Days of Spider-Man

With Raimi having hit the road and a sooner-than-you-think 2012 summer release date looming, Sony hasn’t wasted any time nabbing a new director for the money-shoveling franchise Spider-Man. Sony has confirmed a three picture deal Spider-Man deal with (500) Days of Summer (review here) director Marc “the new hotness” Webb. Marc Webb!? Yes, Marc Webb. Apparently, Columbia (owned by Sony) head honcho Amy Pascal wants to have Marc Webb’s cinematic baby and has had his name in her pocket for

Twihards, Behold! New Moon DVD and Blu-ray Coming in March!

Didn’t get enough of Jacob’s six pack abs or Edward’s hairy Milk Dud vampire nipples back in November? Well don’t fret, friend! The Twilight Saga: New Moon is hitting store shelves on DVD and Blu-ray on March 20, 2010! That’ll be a nice bridge for the Twihards who are fidgeting and antsy, either during class or while folding laundry, at the long gulf between the bleak month of January and June 30, 2010, when The Twilight Saga: Eclipse hits cinemas.

Avatar Wins Weekend Box Office and Golden Globes

Avatar hauled in another $41.3 million at the box office this weekend and leapfrogged Star Wars to become the third highest grossing domestic release of all-time. Another weekend like this and it will assuredly pass The Dark Knight. All of the sudden passing Titanic, something I thought was impossible last week, isn’t so insurmountable now. Plus, you have to expect a surge of interest with Avatar winning best picture and best director at The Golden Globes this evening. I’m a

Roger Ebert Bitch Slaps Rush Limbaugh

While I disagree with your take on The Lovely Bones, Roger, I do applaud your lambasting of Rush Limbaugh. Here’s the thing: I understand differing opinions and not always agreeing, that’s just part of life. All of us have friends and family whom with we don’t always see eye-to-eye with politically. Limbaugh however is one of a handful of pundits on both aisles of the political spectrum who serves and does no good. Limbaugh does nothing but stir up trouble.

Spider-Man As You Know It Is Kaput

Sony, in a recent press release and Twitter update, has officially closed the book on Spider-Man 4. In it’s place? Spider-Man… Rebooted. Wait… what? That’s right, Deadline Hollywood broke the news earlier this evening and Sony : Raimi (God bless you, Man!) basically pulled the plug on his involvement with the franchise. The reason (besides the possible reason cited here in this story)? Sony’s pushing for a 2011 May release would harm the creative integrity of the story. And with
