I’ve been in a bad mood for the last few days, so I thought I’d follow my Best of the Decade article from earlier this week with a look back at 2009’s worst films. Then I realized that admist all my 2010 celebrations, I’d neglected to list the best of 2009 as well. I’m sure, like everything in the world of film, these are debatable. One person’s nightmare is another’s wet dream, so while I wanted to commit hara-kiri during …

Because if it does, this movie is going to suck. Movie posters (one-sheets) are a tricky thing. As part of a film’s marketing head of steam, the poster needs to eye-poppingly convey the tone and gist of the film it’s advertising. Sometimes they succeed as art, sometimes they succeed at stoking interest and other times, well… they don’t (I’m looking at your lazy attempts, floating heads). Not that I’ve been anticipating the upcoming winner of “Bloated title of the Century”: …
Content has been scarce here at AATM.com since the holidays began a few weeks ago and this week has been even worse since I’ve been pounded in the soft parts with some type of godforsaken virus that has left my sinuses stuffed and inflamed, my throat sore, and given me a greasy Dirty Sanchez beard akin to something out of a Vietnam POW camp. Worst of all, being so congested makes me sound like a cross between Sylvester Stallone and …
So I watched the trailer for Bungie and Microsoft Game Studios’ new first-person shooter, Halo: Reach, during the Spike Video Game Awards last Saturday. All I have to say is one word: Meh. Color me not impressed. All I saw was the same old same old. Was I supposed to have jizzed in my pants because a Spartan has a skull painted on the visor of his helmet? Honestly, unless there is a multitude of surprises – both in story …
It’s that special time of the year. The year foreign press send out their nominations for the best of all things filmic in the hopes of rubbing shoulders with the stars they write about. Best actress for Julia Roberts in Duplicity*? Best actor for Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes. Really? Crackpot nominations for the sake of ass-kissing aside, The Golden Globes have more legitimacy than not and have become a marquee ceremony– a christening of Awards Season and a …
I realize we’ve seen The Clone Wars animated movie and The Clone Wars animated television series since the release of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith in 2005, but anyone who thinks ROTS was the last live-action Star Wars movie is smoking crack. I’ve been saying this since 2005 and even Roger Ebert agreed with me back then, saying in his review of Sith – Although Lucas has absolutely said he is finished with the series, it is …
Not only is Clint Eastwood a superb director, but he is a hard worker. Seriously, the guy has been going non-stop with award-winning films since 2003 and Mystic River, which, I should add, he followed-up with Million Dollar Baby, Flags of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, Changeling, Gran Torino, Invictus and, due in 2010, Hereafter. With the exception of Hereafter, I dare you to argue that any one of those movies isn’t nothing short of stellar. You can’t. And …
To: Vince Horiuchi, Salt Lake Tribune’s Resident “Village Vidiot” From: Andy Morgan, Inventor of Awesome Subject: Set Phasers to Dumb for Trek Vince, Vince, Vince. Sigh. Remember when you wrote this in the Salt Lake Tribune last Monday, November 16th? Director J.J. Abrams goes where no Trekkie has gone before by “re-imagining” the classic 1960s series Star Trek as a bombastic, action-packed, Star Wars-esque — and ultimately dumbed-down — movie that is anything but true Trek. The original crew of …
The Twilight Saga: New Moon killed, killed, killed at the box office this weekend with close to $141 million thanks to the deep pockets of chicks across the land. Earlier in the week, industry tracking had New Moon at a respectable $60-70 million. While we here at AATM “doubted the validity” of those numbers, I don’t think it was until the midnight premieres that there was an inkling the movie would inspire an opening that would land it THIRD ALL …
New Moon is currently basking in a pile of critical distaste. It’s currently a sad and deflated 30% on Rotten Tomatoes and has 70% of listed critics giving it stink eye. Not that critical ire matters in terms of films like these. New Moon will make its money and add further fuel to the “critics are out of touch” fire– just like Twilight’s spiritual cinematic brothers G.I. Joe and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen did this summer. Critical loathing won’t …
