John Hughes: Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Everyone knows by now of John Hughes death the other day, so instead of crafting some long-winded eulogy about Hughes’ place in cinema history, I figured it better to post one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite John Hughes movies – Planes, Trains & Automobiles. Beware: There are several f-words in this clip, but this exchange between Steve Martin and Edie McClurg is absolutely classic.

Snake Eyes Stabs a Car

I’m not sure if you knew this, but there’s a GI Joe movie coming out. It’s true! Some think it’s going to be a pile of salad garnished with cat poop. Others think it’s going to be the movie that validates a 30+ year men playing with toys made for 10 year olds. Others, namely the sage readers and editors of AATM, will wait until the movie comes out, then rub the aforementioned cat poop in its face. Or maybe

Note to Westates: Give Us The Hurt Locker!

Seems like I’ve been pimping Kathryn Bigelow’s universally praised The Hurt Locker since time began. Way back in May I  listed it as one of the summer’s Must Sees. Unfortunately, it’s been tough to catch a screening as it’s been rolling around in a very limited LA/New York release. Three cheers for small miracles as The Hurt Locker opens a little wider this weekend and has Salt Lake City listed as one of the fortunate cities it’s shacking up with.

Extended MTV Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Clip

Another extended promo from The MTV Movie Awards, this one from Michael Bay’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” Surprisingly, Bay himself and the goddess Megan Fox introduced the clip. Shia “No No No Wait Wait Wait” Lebouf was in his seat pondering the skinniness of his tie and the tightness of his pants while the clip went down. If you missed it, you can see the clip before. As for me, while I am excited to get my Autobot and

The Twilight Saga: New Moon MTV Teaser

The MTV Movie Awards were tonight and you didn’t miss anything. Between a few funny bits from Andy Samberg, Bruno (Sacha Baron Cohen) putting his butt crack in Eminem’s face and Megan Fox and Ana Faris serving as visual Viagra, you might have caught this extended clip from “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” If you didn’t, you can see it below. My take? The CGI werewolf is lame and I’m also wondering with the emotionality of the Bella/Edward love affair is

Tarantino Makes a Better Spokesperson than Eli Roth

While Inglorious Basterds delights and revels in things I think most human beings should find repugnant, I’m going all apologist after viewing the “Jail Break” clip below. Between the irreverent entry and playful zing of Brad Pitt’s introduction of the Basterds to the legendary Ennio Marricone’s bouncy score, it’s hard not to feel a little twinge of fun, film-geek anticipation at Quentin Tarantino’s deft play for attention. Tarantino– you bastalonie. Fire Roth as your spokesperson, because now I’m listening. For

Terminators and Pizza go Together Like Ladies and Peanut Butter

In a recent red carpet interview, Terminator creator James Cameron had some exciting stuff to say about the upcoming Terminator: Salvation: “It doesn’t look like it’s going to be an embarrassment.” He’s out to get you HYPED! Sign me up for a Friday/Saturday double viewing. Luckily, Pizza Hut has a little more skin in the game and is giving you a glimpse of a scene from the movie (which, from a visual standpoint, looks ominously ethereal)– complete with McG introduction

(Real) Disney Animation is Back

A few years back, 2D Disney animation (ie- “cartoon animation”) was suffering diminishing returns, while newfangled “computer” animation was creating a magical land called Jackpot City. Disney nixed their film animation division after Home on the Range and shoveled time and effort into their CG division, churning out unforgettable classics like Meet the Robinsons, Chicken Little and The Wild. Luckily, Pixar big man and animation lover John Lasseter (Toy Story, Cars) was put in charge of Disney animation when Pixar and

Prince of Persia Looks… Sandy

I probably don’t need to go into a rant on video game adaptations and their track record of pooptitude– it’s a simple cinematic fact (to date)  and exists as its own rule– right along side Penelope Cruz equaling Box Office Poison and an assurance of a Matthew McConaughey romcom (is there any other kind?) containing shirt misplacemant and drawling “aawwwwll raaaighhhhts”. Still, high hops have been foistered in the form of Prince of Persia, the film based on the climbing,

Obligatory MTV Movie Awards Post

Yawn. So MTV just announced the nominees for its largely pathetic annual movie marketing awards show. No big surprise here – “Twilight” racked up seven nominations, including Best Actress Who Really is a Huge Pothead and Shiny Skin My Butt Award (also known as the OMG! You Pasty Bastard! Award). I kid, of course, but really, that’s about how credible MTV’s golden popcorn trophies are in the realm of cinema. The only thing remotely good about the MTV Movie Awards
