Andy’s 2019 Oscar Picks

Welp. Here we are. Two days away from tuning into the host-less Oscar ceremonies and a few things are absolutely ironclad about Sunday’s telecast at 6PM MST on ABC.

First, if you voted for Donald Trump in 2016 and you’re still wearing your MAGA hat, chances are this isn’t your cup of tea. But then what does it matter anyway, right? You and I both know you haven’t seen ROMA, BLACKKKLANSMAN, VICE or THE FAVOURITE. You probably think Yorgos Lanthimos is a fancy Greek yogurt at Walmart. In fact, like Ron Burgundy, the word “diversity” probably doesn’t register in your vocabulary.

I’m kidding, of course.

Kind of.

Second, and akin to the first, somebody is going to go off the rails with a political message. It’s going to happen. My pick? Barbara Streisand. But don’t count out Congressman John Lewis or maybe Samuel L. Jackson. Shaft’s Twitter zingers at the current occupant of the White House are something to behold. Either way, even if you support what they support, you’re gonna cringe a little bit.

Which leads me to my next cover-your-eyes Oscar prophecy. Somebody – actually many somebodies – will get played off the stage because their acceptance speech was too long. Honestly, if the Oscar producers want to trim the runtime, the best thing they can do is encourage winners to keep their speeches under a minute. Just get up, say thanks, congratulate the other nominees, be excited and grateful and then get the F off the stage.

At any rate, this year’s Academy Awards are going to be interesting, particularly without a host. The show’s producers have either awkwardly stumbled into something that will speed up the night’s festivities, or this will go down as one of the crappiest Oscar nights in recent memory.

Here are my picks for each of the 24 categories. Note, these aren’t my personal preference, but what should win.
