February is typically a pretty crappy movie month in my opinion. Kinda like January, these are the bone-chilling cinema doldrums, a veritable purgatory between the pre-Oscar barrage of September, October, November and December. I would make a comment about Thanksgiving and Christmas being good movie release dates, but with crap like Yogi Bear, I’m not so sure anymore. Either way, if you’re fans of Shaun of The Dead and Hot Fuzz, then buckle your shoes and cinch up your underpants because Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are back in the Greg Mottola-directed (Superbad, Adventureland) comedy, Paul.
Paul is an alien, voiced by the once-funny Seth Rogan (Observe and Report), who joins two British nerds roadtripping across America in pursuit of all things nerdtastic, i.e. the extra-terrestial highway in Nevada – that kind of thing. Aside from Rogan, Pegg and Frost, the cast is quite the ensemble, including Jason Bateman (The Switch), Kristen Wiig (MacGruber), Bill Hader (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), Jane Lynch (Glee), Sigourney Weaver (Avatar) and Blythe Danner (Little Fockers).
Take a peek at the trailer after the jump. I think it looks pretty funny, but truth be told I’d have half as much interest in Paul if it wasn’t for Mottola helming the movie. He’s proven himself worthy with a smash hit in Superbad and showed he isn’t just a Judd Apatow knock-off with his follow-up, Adventureland. Something tells me his skill meshed with the writing and acting talents of Pegg and Frost will yield hilarity come February.
