Star Trek’s never been known for it’s monsters. While alien creatures beyond a guy with a mask/jacked up forehead are few and far between, Star Trek has always prided itself on high-minded hypothesis, scientific based discovery/exploration of the cosmos and the universal themes of humanity– IE- knobby foreheads, nerdtasticism, and a screen full of boring…
… which is why JJ Abrams, for the love of all that’s space opera, was hired to inject some directorial freshness. The trailer definitely shows lots of un-Star Trek-ey shenanigans, namely “s-e-x”, intercrew beatdowns, lots of explodin’ and colloquial sass that includes a reference to the sheep love that can’t be named. It also showed a brief glimpse of a genuine, larger than a horse, floppy-mouthed monster.
Star Trek reboot, I salute you. Monsters are (almost) always cool.
And so, with the new Star Trek franchise reboot speeding toward its May 8 release, carrying with it the hopes and dreams of a studio, a franchise and a legion of Trekkers (Trekkies? Treknicians?– I don’t know what they’re calling themselves these days), the hype machine is moving from a trickle to a torrent of hype-a-riffic proportions in an effort to stoke non-nerd desire to see this film. Part of this torrential torrent is a monster pic. The aforementioned monster has been floating around the web as a screen grab from the trailer, so it’s nothing new, but still… this is a little clearer.

I have two thoughts: One, I can’t figure out what in the eff that is and two, it looks, gasp, like something from the “Attack of the Clones” arena scene, which is to say 100% lame. There. I said it.
“Star Trek” was never a favorite of mine. “Wrath of Kahn” was probably the closest I got to enjoying Kirk and The Gange, so I hope Mr. Abrams can sway me to enjoy and pine after the reboot. I’m skeptical.
I am quite looking forward to the new Star Trek. Hope it doesn’t disappoint…

I do have II, III and IV resting comfortably in the DVD collection at home. Soon enough, they’ll be resting comfortably in Bluray as well. I know that breaks all kinds of Trek “even numbered” rules, but anyone who thinks Trek IV is a keeper is clinging a little to closely to decades gone by.
In the mean time, I have total faith in Abrams and am looking forward to a real hootennany come May 8.
As for the monster, I kinda dig it. Reminds me of the art from Wayne Douglas Barlow’s “Expedition: Being an account in words and artwork of the A.D. 2358 Voyage to Darwin IV”. Yeah, I’m geek like that.
